I had a great-great uncle named Cuffy
DeMotte in Brookville. He was an institution in Brookville for years as an auto mechanic. He also accumulated many antique vehicles. Anyways, when I
was a junior in high school, there was a sort of tribute to him because he
was the oldest living member of the American Legion in PA. He was also one
of the few remaining WWI vets. To put it simply, my basketball coach caught
one of the articles, and when I was moving slowly in practice the next day,
he yelled "your old uncle Cuffy could move faster than that!". From those
humble roots, the nickname was born. I am now known almost exclusively as
Cuffy to my high school friends, their parents, and my teachers.
